The remarkable world of orchids is much more varied than most of us can imagine. Orchids don't just look like those in a flower shop window and don't just grow in tropical forests. Less than 27,000 species grow worldwide, except for the driest deserts and areas permanently covered with snow and ice. With the exception of Antarctica, we can find them on all continents and they grow beyond the Arctic Circle.
The exhibition in the Fata Morgana greenhouse will take you through the world of orchids, literally all over the world. The individual continents and their most interesting parts are connected not only by orchids but also by human footprints in the form of drawings by local people.
Orchids have been able to adapt to almost any condition on Earth where plants can survive. They bloom on the tops of the mountains at altitudes above 4,700 meters and near the Siberian cold pole, in the swamps almost in the water, and in the semi-deserts, where there is at least a small amount of water. We can find them not only in tropical forests but also in Czech meadows. From the moment people discovered their beauty and the possibilities of use are diminishing.
The annual March exhibition of orchids in the botanical garden returns again from March 3 to 20. This time it will take you on a trip around the world where you probably wouldn't expect orchids. There will be no surprises, you will learn a lot about people and orchids.
Klára Franc Vavříková, one of the best Czech florists, Will design and realize the exhibition floral arrangements. Klára is participating in our orchid exhibition for the fourth time in a row. She was literally inspired by the whole world and its diverse range of colors. As you walk through the greenhouse, you will come across many typical symbols of the six continents. All this was originally processed using a variety of materials, complemented by multicolored flowers of live orchids and other plants.
For visitors who succumb to the magic of orchids, there is again a popular sale of orchids and other plants. There will be a wide range of cultivars and botanical orchid species imported directly from the Netherlands. Experienced sellers will advise suitable plants for beginners and more advanced growers.
Orchids belong to the family of invertebrates and are one of the two most numerous families of vascular plants. The exact number of orchid species worldwide is not known. It is estimated that about one in ten species of higher plants on earth is an orchid. However, new ones are described every year.
We grow approximately 2,500 species of orchids in our greenhouses. We specialize exclusively invaluable native botanical species. The collection includes both well-known genera, such as Cattleya, Cymbidium, Dendrobium, or Oncidium, as well as those that only experts know about. A large part of the collection consists of a special collection of miniature orchids from the Pleurothallidinae section, which is used for scientific purposes.
On the occasion of the exhibition, we produced a limited edition of scarves. They are hand-sewn and hand-printed. The motif is inspired by the patterns and symbols of the original inhabitants of the six continents and you can choose from two variants, a black scarf with a cream print or a beige scarf with a sand-brown print.
