The annual orchid exhibition brings joy through a profusion of colourful blooms after the winter months, along with fascinating insights into these extraordinary plants. This year, we follow in the footsteps of explorers and growers, travelling back to the era of the very first Czech greenhouses and the beginnings of orchid collections.
We will step into a time when ships set sail for the tropics, collectors were willing to pay astonishing sums for rare specimens, and caring for orchids was a daily adventure for castle gardeners.
You can look forward to vibrant floral displays, as well as the traditional orchid sale, where you can choose your own exotic plant to take home.
At weekends, you can also take part in creative workshops and make your own original miniature greenhouse with houseplants.

WHAT AWAITS YOU
This year’s exhibition is built around the stories behind how orchids travelled from tropical rainforests to European greenhouses. It recalls the age of expeditions, when new species were discovered, crossed oceans and gradually found their place in the first collections and Czech gardens alike. You will learn who brought orchids to Europe, how they were cultivated in the past, and why they ranked among the most coveted treasures of their time.
In the Fata Morgana Greenhouse, you will encounter themed floral arrangements filled with orchids and other tropical plants – from delicate details to striking individual specimens. The exhibition installation is created in cooperation with the Horticultural Academy in Mělník under the guidance of Klára Franc Vavříková. The exhibition curator is Ing. Romana Rybková, curator of tropical plants at the Prague Botanical Garden.
The programme also includes the traditional sale of orchids and houseplants in the Exhibition Hall of the Ornamental Garden (Tue–Sun, 9.00am–7.00pm), where you can choose the perfect plant to take home.
At weekends, you can join creative workshops and create your own miniature greenhouse with houseplants.

TIPS FOR A COMFORTABLE VISIT
- Quieter atmosphere – Weekdays tend to be less busy, allowing you to enjoy the exhibition and shop for plants at a relaxed pace.
- Busier weekends – Expect higher visitor numbers and possible waiting times at the ticket office or at the entrance to the Fata Morgana Greenhouse.
- Use public transport if possible – Parking capacity is limited, and the route from the parking lot to the Fata Morgana Greenhouse involves hilly terrain.
- Baby carrier instead of a stroller – Strollers are not permitted inside the greenhouse and must be left at the entrance. For a more comfortable visit with small children, we recommend using a baby carrier.
- Exhibition opening hours – The exhibition is open Tuesday–Sunday, 9.00 am–7.00 pm. On Mondays, both the Fata Morgana Greenhouse and the exhibition are closed (maintenance day). Last entry is at 6.30 pm.
- Orchid sale – Takes place in the Exhibition Hall of the Ornamental Garden and follows the exhibition opening hours (Tue–Sun, 9.00 am–7.00 pm). The sales area is not accessible through the turnstiles near the Exhibition Hall. We recommend visiting the exhibition in the Fata Morgana Greenhouse first, then walking to the sales area in the Ornamental Garden.
- Faster entry with an e-ticket – With an online ticket, you can go straight to the turnstiles and avoid queues at the ticket office. (Website in Czech only)
Admission
Admission to the exhibition is included in the standard entrance fee to the botanical garden, which covers access to all expositions, exhibitions, and ongoing events (unless otherwise specified).
