The Plant Odyssey exhibition celebrates the opening of the new exposition of the same name and takes you on a fascinating journey through the history of plants — from the earliest land plants that emerged more than 432 million years ago, through the vast coal-forming swamps of the Carboniferous Period, to the plants that surround us today. |
Explore the evolution of plants through fossils, living species, and the remarkable stories they tell. Discover how plant fossils are formed, why identifying them is often more challenging than identifying animal fossils, and what palaeobotanists can uncover from these ancient remains.
Meet Cooksonia barrandei — the oldest known land plant species, first discovered in what is now the Czech Republic. The exhibition also showcases giant Carboniferous lycophytes of the genus Lepidodendron, plants from the Mesozoic Era, and species that closely resemble those growing today.
Among the highlights are 3D-printed skulls of three herbivorous dinosaurs, alongside examples of the plants they are thought to have fed on.
The exhibition connects the world of fossils with the living collections of the Prague Botanical Garden. Follow a special trail through the Garden and discover living relatives of the plants represented by fossils in the Exhibition Hall.
The new Plant Odyssey exposition, located above the Fata Morgana Greenhouse, presents plant evolution as an ongoing journey shaped by change, challenges, and adaptation. Evolution is not merely a chapter of the past — it is still taking place today, albeit at a much slower pace.
