Modest, non-flowering, and yet truly fascinating. Mosses, ferns, lycophytes and horsetails take us back to a time when plants first began to colonise the land. What part do water and wind play in their lives? How have they survived millions of years of evolution, and what secrets do they conceal? Step into the miniature world of spores, elaters, gemmae and prothalli, and discover these remarkable plants using all your senses. |
With From Mosses to Ferns, we bring this year’s journey through plant evolution to a close. We travel back to a distant past, to a time when plants were gradually leaving the water behind and beginning to colonise the land.
Spore-bearing plants were once a major part of the vegetation of the Palaeozoic era, and their ancient relatives grew to the size of today’s trees. Over the course of their long evolutionary history, mosses, lycophytes, horsetails and ferns have adapted to profound changes in their environment, and their representatives can still be found on Earth today.
What makes them so special? How do they reproduce without flowers or seeds? Why is water so important to them, and what role does wind play? And what remarkable things can their tiny, inconspicuous spores do?
Come and explore their world up close.
